There is a stretch of weeks at the start of a pregnancy when the news has been told to a small number of people and almost nothing has been bought yet. The nursery is still a guest room. The shower is months away. What she has, at this point, is a piece of news, a few people who know it, and a long stretch of time before any of it becomes real. The Announcement is the Edit for that stretch, four pieces, none of them for the baby, all of them for the version of her that is just beginning to become a mother. The keepsake she will fill in slowly. The candle for the long evenings ahead. The book to begin the shelf. The lift-the-flap pregnancy story she will read to the bump, half as a joke, until it stops being one.
WHAT'S INSIDE
Sugar Paper Baby Book in Chambray, linen-bound, written in by hand. The keepsake started early, first ultrasound photo on the inside cover, first kick on the page after.
Apotheke Mini Tin Candle in Canvas, soft cotton and clean wood, the small candle for the bedside or the bath. Lit on the evenings the news is still settling.
Hello in There. by Jo Witek, lift-the-flap pregnancy story, illustrated by Christine Roussey. The book read to the bump, gently, in the months before the baby is here.
The First Forty Days by Heng Ou, the postpartum confinement cookbook and care guide. The book started in the third trimester, used in the first six weeks.
WHY WE BUILT IT
The Announcement is the Edit we built for the gift-giver who heard the news early, the mother of the new mother, the sister, the closest friend, the partner's parent. Most of the gifts she will receive over the next eight months will be for the baby. This one is for her, in the version of herself she is becoming. Four pieces, no clothing, no swaddle, no plush. The keepsake to fill in slowly, the candle for the evenings, the book for the bump, the cookbook for what comes after. Sent in the week she tells you, or the week after.
